Friday 15th Tragedy - Sacked!!
This is our last sea day and
tomorrow at Copenhagen will be our last full day. Home in 8 days.
Aptly, we have been thinking of
re-enacting our triumphal performance of I
still Call Australia Home in the Talent Show tonight. We both have the
flu/fever and Bernadette is probably even worse. We decided we would go along
to the rehearsal and see if we could find any more Aussies. The staff are very
keen for us to give it a go – maybe they don’t have many others but certainly
they have said that they would like us to be in it because we have been so much
part of everything else. They had made it plain that they imagined us having a
go at the Perfect Couple show last night – maybe if we weren’t sick we might.
There were only 4 Aussies at the
rehearsal but the staff said they would come and join in so we went up and told
the band what we had in mind. They had never heard of Peter Allen but they said
they would lay down a waltz just to give us something to keep in time. One
other lady came up with us (after J was scraped off her chair by most of the
entertainers) and Bernie’s mum came up too.
We had one run through it, at which
stage the band said yes that’s great – just lose the man. Aaaaargh!! Sacked!! I
shuffled to the edge of the stage, pinched my nose and ignominiously took the
plunge. The three girls settled into the song, leaving out verse 3 because the
tune changes and the band didnt get it. It sounded really good and we may well
get some more singers this evening. The others who were there said they would
tell their friends. Apparently some travel agent in Bunbury organised 30 people
for this cruise.
Now we have a rest for an hour
until the grand finale of the cumulative quiz. Later – further Tragedy . . .
they came up with some awesome questions that we had no idea about. The
redhead’s team knew which German city was called the city of 7 towers (Lubeck .
. yes exactly) and also knew that the Tower of London is guarded by ravens. We
should have remembered that Nobel discovered dynamite and although we were
awake to Rooseveldt dying before the end of the war, we didn’t know that Truman
was next. J weighed in with a couple of her specialities – the Beatles broke up
in 1970 and Disney’s first feature film was Snow White + 7 dwarfs. But the
redhead won the MSC throw rugs by 1 point.
We are going to do the buffet again
tonight – hopefully be well for a proper dinner tomorrow. We spent a lot of
time in cabin watching tv today and it is remarkable that the news and feature
stories are all about the Greek election and international finance. The US
election rated a mention and we were quite surprised when somebody referred to
the Olympics which start in 28 days.
I wonder just what options the
Greeks think they have? It seems that the leftist loonies are promising to
scrap the austerity measures and return to the good old days of the Long
Siesta. Of course they are going to vote
for that – but it isn’t a realistic outcome. Far more likely they will end up
losing the Euro subsidies and being adrift on their own. A bit like the Greens
in Australia who believe that they have saved the Barrier Reef and the
Murray-Darling basin. Democracy is fine as long as the voters understand the
alternatives and don’t just opt for the charlatans promising them the biggest
handouts.
