Tuesday 7 February The road to Calafate
It poured all night and we were very lucky that it stopped for a few minutes so we could get the tent down dry. Wasn’t supposed to take too long getting to Calafate but firstly we were held up for over an hour waiting for the locals to open their shops (at 10am!!!) Bear in mind that they close for 3 hours at 1pm. Eventually they turned up about 10.30, allowing the trekkers to return what was left of their camping equipment and get fragments of their deposits back.
The border crossing was pretty easy. Sam got one stamp squeezed away but the other one went on a newish page – all in all it is going quite well. The day dragged on after that and it was about 5 before we got settled into the hostel. Nice and clean and only 4 per room!! We got Gordon and Yvonne the Allnight Gargler. Sam was telling them that they were “out of luck” in hoping to pay extra for a double room. Well . . if you call it luck that she had reserved two doubles for the Oasis crew and the trainees, none of whom seem to be paying for them.
We wandered down to town and checked out the travel agents and the bus depot for transport to the Glacier tomorrow. We are going to wait and see how the weather looks in the morning and then probably take the local coach out for 120 pesos each. We will eavesdrop any interpretation we think we need and probably won’t take the optional boat trip along the face of the glacier. Most of our group are going with the Oasis/hostel package for 230 pesos.
Cooked our own dinner of chorizo sausage, onion and butternut pumpkin and fell into bed early.
