Tuesday 17 January
I managed to get the Brazilian side to put their stamp in a small space on a well-used page but the Argentine side ignored my preferred spot and insisted on stamping next to the (wrong) Brazilian stamp. Sam was afraid we would have to take everything out of the truck (as the previous 2 buses had) but we pretty much just drove through and nobody actually shot at us.
We are in a hostel for 2 days – a bit of a dump after our great campsite. We are in a 10 bed dorm sharing one toilet/shower/basin. I asked Sam about upgrade alternatives and she referred the question in Spanish (no more Portuguese for a while) to the receptionist, while shaking her head as if to encourage a negative response. It all became too hard and we just stayed in the dorm, which hasn’t turned out too bad anyway.
Not far from where we are staying there is a T junction of 2 rivers. It is here that 3 countries have borders, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Cool huh!
We had salad for lunch but decided to go wild and had pizza for dinner – a Hawaiian with mango. The heat had worn out and we enjoyed a bit of a ramble around the better part of town, stopping for small icecreams and looking in souvenir shops. We found rather a good frudgemegnut (for Kiwi readers) with a handpainted picture of the waterfall and a bright toucan in the foreground. At the risk of sounding kitchy, the whole is framed in chips of gemstones.
The rooms have large fans running and (apparently) a man came and poked a remote control through the door at 11pm and turned the AC on. We were long gone by then.
