Tuesday 3 January Back to Rio (briefly)
The crew were slow with brekky again this morning but we were first to the table and were only joined by one of The Boys (the Cute One so I am told). We waited as long as possible before we had to go in and pack, which only took 2 minutes. The other two were just about ready to arise by then. It was only 2 blocks to my favourite place . . . the Rodoviaria!! The bus turned up on time, complete with immaculate driver and 4 hours later – here we are back in the suburbs of Rio.
The local bus was even wilder than usual. The driver set off like a maniac the moment we were inside and we both got thrown around while he crashed his way through the gears and flung the bus hard left and hard right and back again. Wearing a backpack on one shoulder and carrying another bag in one hand and money in the other, we had a tenuous grasp on the railings and turnstile setup and had our work cut out to get through and find a seat.
We checked straight into the hostel and had an hour or so to wash clothes before the tour meeting. We were very relieved to finally get rid of the $1600 we had been carrying around in $US cash ever since September. It was also interesting to meet Peter and the rest of the passengers and the crew. We chose not to go out for dinner with some of the others, preferring to stick to the tuna and salad theme, and went to bed feeling quite virtuous.
