15/3 How steep the climb...

It rained steadily all night. The owner said it was fine to delay the boat trip till tomorrow - says the sun will shine :) Enjoyed a very well laid out brekky served by a fellow with immaculate English. Had a supplemantary nap since it was still gloomy outside.

Lunch next door again - just pumpkin soup this time with the most delicious wholemeal bread. Headed straight off across the markets checking there is an ATM and J walked up to the Inca Astronomical site. C waited with the 8 year old who extracted the $1 fee from everyone climbing up. It was steep!!! J reported that there was little information due to the nice concrete sign having been vandalised, apparently by Argies who left Islas Malvinas (Falklands) graffiti - such sore losers! Something along the line of lining up to the sun on 21 June as was the case at the pre-Inca monument. More taxis and a bus being blessed in front of the Cathedral.

J writes - Horca del Inca (Inca gallows):  It was a very steep hill, mostly steps and mostly in good condition.

Just the altitude sucks it right out of you.  Very pretty climb up between massive granite outcrops.  Some pretty flowers and a very good view over Copa and the lake.  Had to keep stopping to breath deeply and try to stop the feeling of dizzyness and nausea.  It will be very nice when we get down from the altitude.  The astronomical observatory consisted of a lintel between two tall granite spikes.  Some of the surrounding rocky outsrops had holes drilled into them and apparently on the summer and winter solstice the sun shines through the holes and illuminates the lintel.  Quite amazing really considering how old it is.

Looking for a hotel in Puna.

Another very nice dinner next door. We are trying to eat less but . . . There are a pair of local musos who drop in for 10 minutes or so playing Latin songs then they pass the hat and move on. Very enjoyable in short bursts.

Speaking of hats ....   this is the only 'locals' hat we have seen on any of the many market stalls.  Don't think it suits however.
