13/5 Rhodes - more museums

Sunday 13 Rhodes

Gym, brekky on the terrace, won 3 sets of trivia and sweet talked our way to a set of Tshirts J Lunch and off to Rhodes – a very attractive island. There is a complete walled city with fortifications all in good order.
Sailing in. Walls, forts and castles beckon

Main city gates

Inside and beyond were lots of green trees and gardens and the streets were ripe with Greek food, drink and culture. I left J in the Archaeological Museum (yes again) in the hospital of the Knights of St John and went off to find an internet place.

Ok, yes, I love museums.  This one is housed in a beautiful building (hospital of the Knights of St John) and that alone was worth the admission price.  Pottery, armoury, statues, jewellery etc etc.
Courtyard

Long hall

(Above and below) huge mosaics in fantastic condition

Love this architecture

I then wandered up the street of the Knights.  This houses buildings of the 7 tongues – where the different nationalities of the order would meet.

Church on the St of the Knights

At the top of this street was the castle of the grand masters.  Yet another stunning building.  Main features were the floor mosaics which mostly came from 5th BC Kos, carved wooden furniture, chandeliers, mirrors and some statues.  Moats and battlements complete with cannons outside.

Then wandered around these stunningly beautiful streets past the Mosque of Suleyman the Great.  Found the library and Hammans (Turkish baths) and the remants of the Temple of Aphrodite.  Lots of outdoor restaurants, shops of all kinds and narrow, winding, cobbled streets.  Perfect.

We sat through the afternoon trivia with the Indian family watching them argue with each other and yell at the quizmaster, who produced a series of American questions. We were well off the pace.

Omar again managed to talk to J without being much aware of my presence,  there was no dessert menu – instead they brought everybody chocolate soufflés, the evening show was a Dutch juggler with a slightly offputting accent and a collection of spectacular tricks that really stretched the envelope of his art. He juggled 7 balls and (later) 7 clubs, juggled luminous objects in the dark and juggled blindfolded. All very slick.
He mentioned that WC Fields & Tom Hanks both trained as jugglers before realising that they could make more of a living doing other things.
We've been delighted by a menagerie of surprise towel friends on all these cruises, but this one is very cool.
