Monday 21 Mainz
Today’s brekky was even better than
Innsbruck! There was bacon and eggs and a spread of gourmet cheeses as well as
all the basics. We did it full justice.
We ran through a few more bookings – all that remains is the train trip to
Dusseldorf. There was an email from the guide at the Somme who wants E250 to
show us round the memorials – maybe a bit much for us? We printed all the new
vouchers and are certainly set for the boat trip down the Rhine tomorrow.
We went for a bit of a walk through
the old city and a couple of cathedrals – will leave the details for the
cultural and archaeological correspondent.
The next pics are all inside the Mainz Cathedral (Mainzer Dom) While Mainz was heavily bombed in WW2, this Cathedral remained pretty much intact.
The stained glass windows are the work of artist Marc Chagall. Very different, very nice.

The main square - Guttenburg
This wooden column has lovely carvings (above) and also metal nails and studs/bolts to make the patterns (below)

This guy lost his head.
This was indoors and was very impressive
Typical street scape
It's Spring and the gadrens are lovely. This plant smelt divine.
Below is St Stephen's Mainz. Totally destroyed in WW2.

The below mermaid is situated pretty close to the main square. Different as she has two legs.
