Tuesday 15 Crete (Chania)
We woke in a scungey commercial
port some distance from the city. A geometrically precise military graveyard
with rows of white crosses commemorated Commonwealth dead in the 2nd
world war. The Germans dropped parachutists here – the first time it had ever
been done. No gym this morning – the US Air Force invited us for brekky then we
won the morning quiz. C went looking for internet and discovered it just off
the gangplank. It sort of worked for a while on our balcony but then just
packed up.
Snowy mountains on Crete
We watched most of the latest Mission Impossible movie, had lunch and tried in vain to resume internet access. Still a lot of bookings and plans to be effected. We won the afternoon quiz despite ignoring J trying to tell us the Hogwarts train left from platform 9 ¾. (Ignoring me..... sheesh... I did get them to agree to the 9 part of it after a whole heap of guesses but they would not waiver from the half part of it ....oh never mind...) Back in the gym before the formal dinner.
By the way, we noticed that a plane
went into a hill near Jomsom airport in Nepal, killing 15 Indian pilgrims. We
flew that route and watched pilgrims showering under the icy water in the
Muktinath temple at the head of the valley. One of the world's most dangerous airports.
Dinner was essentially lobsterish.
Lobster bisque then Caribbean Lobster in butter and rum sauce, followed by
Baked Alaska. There were all sorts of
particularly tempting alternatives and I suppressed the urge to try the lamb
shank as well.
The evening show was a high energy
production called Velocity featuring the singers and dancers, the
contortionist, some aerialists and the a capella singers. Very good. Tonight we
get our hour back – yaay. Tomorrow is the second sea day with all sorts of
little treats.
