Friday 14 October
Train arrived on time at 11.35 and we boarded. Already full of sleeping Chinese but there were 2 top bunks empty. Very high up, reached by not very well designed ladder. An alcove with 6 bunks, open to the corridor. Luggage goes on a high shelf in the corridor. Left large part of scalp under it during attempt to occupy bunk. There was a large moderately voluminous snorer under J and soon after our arrival a hearty backward burp resonated from a bum bugle somewhere in the darkness. Slept surprisingly well until 5.30 and then until 7.30 when lights were switched on, boiling water was poured over spicy noodles and the babbling resumed. We seem to stop quite often, usually waiting for trains to pass in opposite direction. This train not going anywhere near as fast as the one that brought us down 4 days ago. Piped Chinese musak …… then ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’? How long have we travelled for …it’s still October isn’t it?
We celebrated our return to Sim’s with bacon burgers with chips . . and then both felt queazy afterwards. Huge laundry exercise. Skyped with all J’s kids and Courtney. Phoned Warren. Good news about the credit cards and awful home invasion story from longstanding friend in Cape Town. Fell asleep watching weird Robin Williams DVD.
