Thursday 13 October
Breakfast 6.30 then vacate and disembark at 7.30. Exit down precipitous and VERY narrow staircase then round and through the bowels of another boat to the shore, where a funicular took us up the bank. Transfer to coach for tour of the dam area (but not the actual dam itself).
So wet that visibility was very poor. Boat lifter under construction -small boat movement will be 30 minutes instead of 3 hours in the lockes.
Pretty steady heavy rain so Chris didn’t venture out. The seven westerners headed off in different directions. We took a taxi to the new train station with Ulrike. Another massive gleaming structure but not yet fully operational, particularly the escalators. Fridge Magnet . . . *tick* We had about 7 hours before Ulrike’s train left and then a further 5 for ours. Went for a fair walk towards the city area – as usual absolutely no white faces anywhere to be seen. Not even at the station. J getting crabby because so many of them staring at her while she is eating noodles out of a cardboard cup . . just like most of them. Village Idiot actually hanging over the back of seat behind to stare into her left ear and a scattering of others gazing slack jawed at her from the rows in front. This beautiful new building and already the floors are scattered with baby puddles that nobody attends to. Smoking widespread and the toilets are awash with ??? Hard sleeper tonight! Hmmmm
