4/10 Road to Kanding

Tuesday 4 Oct . . . MORE SNOW

Less than full sleep due to repeated battering on steel door by would be check ins at 1.30am. Plus sporadic episodes of dog barking. Why don’t they just shoot them? We didn’t need much sleep and jumped up quite easily at 6.30. Ready to meet Duncan downstairs by 7.15 and quickly found a minicab. As usual, a long process of trawling up and down while they tried to fill up. The original deal was 50 each but we said ok 220 for 3 if we go now with empty seats. This fluctuated a few times as he thought he had extras but we headed off on that basis. It was snowing but not accumulating in town but there were thick falls all around and as we climbed the snow covered the road in places. It was very pretty. Then we came across 2 monks whose scooter had given up and in no time they were inside. They were pretty manky monks – redolent of wood smoke and damp clothes, bushy haired and a right pair of porkers, particularly with layers of clothes and gowns. It was like sitting next to Hagrid and a wookie.

Lots of Chinese holiday makers up here and they were just pulling over and blocking the road on either side if they saw anything they wanted to photograph. Suddenly we were in Kanding almost an hour early after quite a pleasant trip. It turned out to be quite a long walk and VERY steep to find the hotel, which is most welcome after almost a week of shared facilities and squatties.
