19/11 All at sea

Saturday 19 November  Venice (or not)

We were due in Venice at noon but there was thick fog so we anchored some way out. Horn blowing warning signals that the ship was stationary.  Announcements shed no new light, meanwhile we were getting alarmed about missing the skyp linkup scheduled for 2pm. They don’t allow skyp through the ship’s internet because it clogs the network. The Red Level plague continues and there is talk of the Captain putting people ashore if they persist in flouting the quarantine. She is anxious about 2000 new passengers starting their Cunard cruise in lockdown.

Derek said they should switch to Trieste, 100km East of Venice and this was eventually announced as the outcome. The forecast for Venice is further fog all day tomorrow. More uncertainty then they said that Cunard would transport all passengers to Venice by coach, including those like us travelling onwards independently. This was a great relief because we have a 1pm train to Rome tomorrow.

We finished up with 49 gold tickets, mostly for winning the trivia. The prize selection was the same lacklustre set and forced us to stock up with bulky and heavy items. Meanwhile, we were buying clothes from the Cunard shop to use up the remaining $250 cabin credit.

We got into dinner and found Joaquim had ordered lobster in garlic butter sauce for both of us! To top it off, they had Chocolate Marquisa on the dessert menu and Reginald added a scoop of ice cream as usual. We are going to MISS this ship!!

Saying goodbye to the entertainment staff was sad, and there were also our dinner companions, trivia team mates, the Canadians and others. An American told me a few days ago I looked like Eric Clapton and turned up tonight with a camera for a photo with me?
